Driving Falling Asleep at the Wheel Causes an Accident

On July 07, 2021, Officer J Woods was dispatched to the scene of an accident at the intersection of Sugarloaf Parkway and Scenic Highway.

The accident occurred at 14:40.

Mr. V Walker was driving a Honda Pilot, Mr. L Watlington was driving a Dodge Charger, and Ms. P Phillips was driving a Kia Optima.

All three vehicles were traveling in the west in the left-hand lane on Sugarloaf Parkway.

Mr. Walker stated that he had been working since 1am and had fallen asleep while driving.

Mr. Watlington and Ms. Phillips were stopped at a red traffic signal which Mr. Walker did not see.

Mr. Walker’s vehicle rear-ended Mr. Watlington’s vehicle, which in turn rear-ended Ms. Phillips’ vehicle.

Ms. Phillips complained of injury and was transported to North Side Medical Center by ambulance.

All three vehicles sustained moderate damage.

Mr. Walker was cited in terms of O.C.G.A. 40-6-49 “Following too closely”.

The weather was cloudy, and the surface condition and light conditions were good.

The accident was reported in Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County.
